Description

The Victorian punishment backboard. This piece was originally a special request from a rather wonderful Governess in the UK. She sent me some links to various sites, which included pictures of an original Victorian punishment backboard, and where its use was explained. I was rather curious and very happy to accept the commission. I liked the finished article so much I decided to add this rather unusual item to my range. This style of Backboard was used to punish and humiliate, rather than solely for posture correction. The Governess would bring it out to deal with the fidgeters and the slouchers. They would have to sit at their desk, or stand in front of everyone, holding it against their back using the crooks of their elbows, possibly being instructed to keep their forearms parallel to the floor, hands out, maybe even holding something heavy. The possibilities are endless, and dependant only upon the Governesses sadistic mind.

The backboard is produced in Beech, as I consider it to be a traditional timber species which for some reason evokes images of the Victorian schoolroom for me. I also think the heavier weight makes it more effective when in use. It is 65cm wide and 15cm tall, at the widest points, and 2cm thick. The edges are square for a more painful effect. Finished with a few coats of oil, and then waxed to a lustre. All sizes are approximate as they are hand carved.
