The Timber.
Timber is a natural product and as such will vary from piece to piece, grain and colour will never be quite the same. I chose to work mainly in Walnut, Cherry, Maple, Ash, Beech and Tulipwood. I use these species because I love the way they respond to my tools and the techniques I employ. I also offer items in Oak, Teak and Purpleheart. These species are harder to work with, but Oak, and especially Teak, can be breathtakingly pretty, and Purpleheart, for all the effort required to finish it, is such an outstandingly beautiful colour, also it is dense, like Teak, and the resulting impact toys are punishing in the extreme!

The desired effect.
The desired effect is sensation. These implements are created to produce sensations, whether that be pain, Pleasure… Whether its consentual punishment, or ‘fun’ishment… My implements will bring all this, but lets dig a little deeper and look at the actual effect. Different timber species, and different styles of implement can create very different sensations. Its easiest to break this down into ‘sting’ and ‘thud’ or a combination of the two. For instance, the standard Paddle, 20mm thick, will feel thuddy with a little sting, whereas the Spatula of the same thickness, because it has a more focussed impact zone, stings a lot more. The thinner Paddles, 10mm thick, are very stingy, whereas the spatula, again having a smaller, more focussed impact, are wonderfully stingy. The larger paddles will be much more thuddy, due to weight and size, but those made from denser, heavier species, such as Teak and Purpleheart, feel a lot more brutal, an implement for those real punishments, those times when transgressions must be paid for, the slate wiped clean, where tears and sorrow are necessary.
The standard paddles and spatulas.
These Paddles and Spatulas are make to a stock shape, though being hand carved they do vary slightly. The stock timber species tend to be Walnut, Maple, Beech, Ash, Tulipwood, Cherry and Oak. I choose these species for their beauty and because, apart from Oak, I love the way they respond to the tools I use and the techniques I employ. Dimensions are approximately 370mm long and 20mm thick. The thin, stingier, variation comes up at approximately 10mm.
The arty paddles and spatulas.
These Paddles and Spatulas are usually one-off designs. Their shape will be guided by the specific piece of timber they come from. Maybe some highly figured grain suggests a shape, maybe a live-edge on the side of a plank offers some inspiration or possibly a certain piece of wood arrives which calls out to be made into something a little different. Sometimes I will take a standard Paddle or spatula and insert a decorative contrasting inlay, or simply produce a Paddle from several varied species. Whatever the reason, these implements are an example of my mind, my eye and my hands given the opportunity to run free.
Victoriana.
Various items which use traditional designs, as used by Victorian Governesses and Schoolmistresses, to humiliate and punish. Backboards, Fingerstocks and little boxes that will lock away a young Gentlemans private parts, to prevent fiddling with himself at night.
Delrin.
Delrin is a very flexible plastic, I use it to produce Canes, Loops and ‘Birch’ bundles. These are severe implements which are ideal for those times when a real punishment is necessary!
